World Cup Mania: de Nederlandse identiteit is oranje

Door Jethro Alons De eerste wedstrijd van Nederland tegen Denemarken keek ik bij een vriend van mij. Toen we tijdens de rust bij hem voor de deur stonden, gekleed in onze oranje shirts, toeterden veel auto’s naar ons en juichten de inzittenden ons toe, waarop wij natuurlijk vrolijk terug juichten. Wat mij opviel was dat veel automobilisten van origine geen Nederlanders waren. Als antropoloog vond ik dit heel interessant. Hoe kan het dat mensen die elkaar totaal niet kennen elkaar toejuichen wanneer “ons” elftal speelt?

By Duane Jethro Ke Nako is a Sotho phrase that roughly translates into “it is here” or “it is time”. Playing on this traditional term, the South African Broadcasting Corporation sought to tap into the charged feelings of anticipation and excitement with the prospect of the looming World Cup, with its own slogan, Feel It is Here. On June 11^th, 2010, it arrived. The day marked a watershed moment in South Africa’s history, as the nation celebrated the opening of the highly anticipated FIFA 2010 World Cup™, to be staged on home soil. World Cup day, as it may be termed, was not only eagerly anticipated, it was also raucously celebrated.

In our new series on the Football World Cup, Duane Jethro will regularly report from South Africa. Duane is currently doing his PhD research in his home-country, looking at cultural heritage initiatives in the post-apartheid era. The World Cup, with its articulations of a (putative) South African authentic culture, has become an important site of Duane’s investigations. In this first part of the series we’ll reproduce Duane’s report on the festivities in the context of the World Cup’s final draw, in which he discusses an object that has recently become somewhat controversial in the Netherlands: the vuvuzela. What does the vuvuzela stand for and where does it come from?

I prefer making a detour when a fish market is near in order to avoid the rotting stench and the staring, dull fish eyes. Nevertheless, every year billions of fishes are consumed by human consumers. In the Netherlands, the consumption of fish is increasing and the Ministry of Agriculture, Well-being and Sports even funded promotion campaigns like “Van vis krijg je nooit genoeg” (“You never get enough of fish”). Quite strange, especially if you know that our oceans will be empty by 2048 if we keep up these fishy eating habits!

Door Tijo Salverda Voor alles is een eerste keer. Deed het pijn de eerste keer verkiezingsprogramma’s lezen? Nee, maar echt fijn was het ook niet. Ik heb me moeten worstelen door de retoriek over veiligheid, migratie, duurzaamheid en onderwijs. Allemaal belangrijk uiteraard, maar misschien moeilijk te verwezenlijken vanwege de geplande bezuinigingen. Uiteraard hebben de partijen daar wel een antwoord op: ‘zoveel bezuinigen hier, zoveel bezuinigen daar.’ Maar hoe zijn we ook alweer in deze situatie terechtgekomen? O ja, kuddegedrag, irrationaliteit en een nogal creatieve manier van werken in de financiële sector. Dus wat zeggen de partijen eigenlijk over de oorzaken van de staatsschuld?

Slumtoerisme in een Indonesische kampong

Door Freek Colombijn Een nieuwe vorm van toerisme is het slumtoerisme. In sommige steden is het mogelijk arme wijken in te gaan onder leiding van een lokale gids. De toerist krijgt het gevoel een authentieke ervaring rijker te worden (“echte armoede”!) en tegelijk biedt de groep het veilige gevoel waar de toerist zich aan vastklampt. Een van de grootste favela’s van Rio de Janeiro, Rocinha, is door de stad aangewezen als een toeristische attractie en trekt 3000 bezoekers per maand. In Zuid Afrika hopen townships op toeristen die de tijd tussen twee voetbalwedstrijden op het WK moeten vullen.

Peter Geschiere houdt ervan ‘westerse’ aannames over Afrika ter discussie te stellen. Hij wil de ‘vanzelfsprekende’ tegenstelling modern – traditioneel, wij en de ander, Europa en Afrika overbruggen. Hij benadrukt dat het ‘daar’ niet zo heel anders is dan ‘hier’. Fieldwork 2010: researching prostitution in the Philippines

With three weeks to go, Sanne Maris looks back on her fieldwork in the Philippines. This is part 6 of our series on master students’ fieldwork.

It is nine weeks now that I am in the Philippines, and fieldwork preparation taught me things should get normal after a while. They don’t. Every week I find myself in several situations in which I am either overwhelmed by everything that happens or it raises many questions on how to respond. I am here in the Philippines to conduct research on prostitution. My main question is how women who prostitute create and maintain security and how the organization I work alongside plays a role in this process.

I knew prostitution was big in the Philippines, but walking in the huge red light district of Angeles City, which is known as the sex city of the country, is still an experience.
