Saida, een oeroude havenstad aan de Middellandse Zee. Gelegen op een smalle kustvlakte halverwege Beiroet en de grens met Israël, is het een strategisch punt op de route van noord naar zuid Libanon. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat vluchtelingen uit Syrië hier neerstrijken: naast de goede bereikbaarheid staat Saida te boek als een anti-Syrisch bolwerk, wat wil zeggen: een centrum van oppositie tegen het regime van de Syrische president al-Assad. Vluchtelingen hopen hier op de bescherming en hulp die ze elders in het land niet krijgen omdat de Libanese regering, ondanks de 10.000 doden, de gruwelijke beelden van in puin geschoten wijken en de wijdverbreide veroordeling vanuit de Arabische wereld, nog steeds ontkent dat zich een humanitaire ramp voltrekt in buurland Syrië. In plaats daarvan, en onder aanvoering van Hezbollah, volgt ze de lijn van de Syrische staatsmedia die de opstandelingen consequent omschrijven als door het buitenland gesteunde terroristen die de nationale orde en veiligheid in gevaar brengen. Voor terroristen en deserteurs is volgens de Libanese regering geen registratie of opvang nodig, en het liefst sturen ze de inmiddels 17.000 Syriërs die hier hun heil hebben gezocht meteen weer terug. Zo wordt over de rug van Syrische vluchtelingen een politieke strijd gestreden tussen de pro-Syrische regering en de anti-Syrische oppositie. En waar er twee honden vechten om een been, loopt een derde ermee heen… 

Overal in Libanon kom je ze tegen: jonge jongens die je schoenen willen poetsen, zeggen dat ze honger hebben en uit Syrië komen. Kleine kinderen die oud ijzer en aluminium blikjes op karretjes stapelen om te verkopen. Moeders die bedelen, een baby op de arm. Hun mannen staan op een straathoek te wachten tot iemand ze misschien als dagloner wil meenemen. In een vicieuze cirkel raken deze vluchtelingen steeds dieper in de put: enkelen van hen voelen zich gedwongen op criminele wijze aan geld te komen om hun familie te kunnen voeden, waardoor hun landgenoten in toenemende mate gemarginaliseerd raken en op steeds minder genade kunnen rekenen van Libanese zijde. Terwijl de regering stug blijft ontkennen dat er iets aan de hand is en zich concentreert op de haperende stroomvoorziening in het land en een mislukte moordaanslag op een prominente christelijke militieleider – toegegeven, ook belangrijk – zijn het slechts een handvol NGO’s en islamistische organisaties die zich het lot van de gevluchte Syriërs aantrekken. De NGO’s concentreren hun activiteiten in het anti-Syrische grensgebied in het noorden waar een afgesloten enclave is ingericht voor 4.000 vluchtelingen. Elders, zoals in Saida, zijn ontheemden veelal overgeleverd aan islamistische organisaties die weliswaar hulp bieden maar zich vooral lijken te bekommeren om hun eigen religieus-politieke agenda, die ze desnoods met geweld verdedigen. Drijvend op het politieke steekspel en de humanitaire problematiek rond de Syrische vluchtelingenkwestie klinkt hun stem steeds luider, als een voorbode op wat Libanon te wachten staat in het geval van een verdere escalatie in Syrië.

Helaas moeten we serieus rekening houden met dat scenario nu het vredesplan van Kofi Annan op het punt staat te falen. Al-Assad lijkt niet van plan zijn zware wapens uit de bebouwde kom te verwijderen en de bombardementen te stoppen voor hij de verzekering heeft dat de opstandelingen het geweld eveneens zullen staken. Althans, dat is de officiële lezing. Wat mij realistischer lijkt, ook in het licht van de geschiedenis van de al-Assad dynastie, is dat het huidige regime voor niets minder tekent dan de absolute overwinning. Een ‘politieke oplossing’ of ‘consensus’ staat voor al-Assad gelijk aan het weggeven van die overwinning en zal koste wat het kost voorkomen worden. De nauwe verwevenheid met de Libanese politiek betekent dat de toch al precaire veiligheidssituatie in Libanon steeds verder uitgehold wordt. Mocht het regime al-Assad verzwakken of zelfs ineenstorten, een scenario dat nog heel wat tijd en bloedvergieten zal kosten, dan brengt dat een gevoelige slag toe aan de Libanese Hezbollah voor wie dit regime een kritieke schakel vormt in het bondgenootschap met de Islamitische Republiek Iran. Dat zal menig lezer misschien in eerste instantie toejuichen, maar bedenk dat een in het nauw gedreven Hezbollah een grote pot ellende betekent die zich tot over de Libanese grenzen zal laten gelden – dat is in de jaren sinds de moord op voormalig premier Rafik Hariri (overigens geboren in Saida) meermaals gebleken. Met haar enorme wapenarsenaal en goedgetrainde milities is Hezbollah’s militaire vleugel niet alleen veel sterker dan het Libanese leger, maar tevens in staat om de regio in lichterlaaie te zetten. Herinnert u zich de bloedige oorlog tussen Hezbollah en Israël in 2006?

Een eerste zaak op dit moment is daarom de-escalatie van conflicten aan beide kanten van de grens. Naast adequate hulp en veiligheid voor vluchtelingen en burgers zal met goede moed en geduld gewerkt moeten worden aan dialoog, bijna tegen beter weten in, om langs die weg uit de huidige snel neergaande spiraal te komen. Tegelijk is het belangrijk om bij onszelf te rade te gaan, zowel wat Syrië als wat de rest van de (Arabische) wereld betreft, wat onze eigen rol is in het in stand houden van dictaturen uit naam van stabiliteit en behoud van soevereiniteit. Structurele internationale misstanden, polarisering en de machtige hand van de wapenhandel dienen aangepakt te worden om eraan bij te dragen dat conflicten niet meer zodanig kunnen escaleren als op dit moment gebeurt in Syrië.

Vooralsnog is er nog geen zicht op een vreedzame oplossing, noch voor Syrië, noch voor Libanon, en daarmee niet voor het hele Midden-Oosten. Deze vaak onuitgesproken wetenschap heeft zich als een deken over Saida heen gelegd. De onzekerheid is weer voelbaar na een periode van relatieve rust. Een teken aan de wand: afgelopen week heeft de coalitie van humanitaire organisaties in Zuid-Libanon het draaiboek voor hulpverlening tijdens rampen en conflicten alvast uit de kast gehaald. Zij zijn in elk geval voorbereid.

The following text was presented as a column at the yearly PhD/MSR student conference of the VU Graduate School for Social Sciences, on the 23rd of September 2011.

I would like to use this opportunity to talk to you about the notion of ‘occupational hazards’.  Usually, these two words refer to dangerous situations that might occur at your workplace. Or injuries that can be caused by work-related activities.

 Interestingly enough, ‘Occupational Hazards’ is also the provisional title of my dissertation. But, since my research topic, which deals with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is all over the news every day already, and even more of late, I don’t want to bore you with that right now.  Instead, I want to briefly talk about occupational hazards in the literal sense:  about the pathologies, be they psychological or physical, a PhD or Research Master student may incur while doing his or her job. And I want to make this a personal story by zooming in on three of such pathologies I more or less suffered from and which I think may also sound familiar to some of you. These are: anxiety, guilt, and, what I would like to call, the “go it alone mentality”.

First anxiety. I want to explain how I apparently got used to working in a region where violent conflict is more likely to occur than, say, Holland, but suddenly got reminded what an intense feeling of fear feels like. And how it influenced my behavior since.

While living in the West Bank, I used to frequent weekly demonstrations against the so-called Separation Barrier or Apartheid Wall. There are many of these demonstrations but I always went to the little village of Bil’in, because a friend of mine lived there. We not only shared our frustration over the Separation Barrier but also had a common interest in soccer club Barcelona, which is why we became friends in the first place. But anyway, I’d attended the demonstration several times before and, while being there, had to seek shelter from tear gas grenades, suffered from light-headedness from tear gas inhalation, and had to run to keep from being hit by rubber-coated bullets. Because the cat-and-mouse game between the young Palestinian protesters and the equally young Israeli soldiers was exactly the same every week, it had become somewhat of a routine, a game even. Accordingly, I allowed myself to let my guard down. Until early May, that is.

As they did sometimes before, the Israeli soldiers used a new kind of weapon, with which they can fire so-called high-velocity tear gas canisters, which are roughly the size of a soda can and made from aluminum. Although they were developed to cover great distances, the soldiers often shoot them straight ahead, at approximately chest height. It’s needless to say that an aluminum canister that can reach several hundreds of yards can do a lot of damage when hitting a person in the chest or even in the head and indeed, people have been seriously injured and even killed. On that sunny afternoon in May I was running downhill with dozens of other protesters, away from the soldiers, in order to not be caught or hit by something, when I suddenly heard a loud scream. I turned around, which in itself is quite dangerous while running, and I saw a young man standing completely still, while blood came gushing out from a huge hole right in the middle of his forehead, roughly the size of a 2-euro coin. I froze, almost in mid-air, turned around, and sprinted back, to see if I could help. While I ran towards the man, I pushed back nausea as I could literally see his brains through the gaping hole. As people kept speeding past us, I grabbed his arm, together with another man, and dragged him to the ambulance, which sped him to the hospital. Moments later, after returning to the village, I stood shaking, looking at the man’s blood on my pants and shoes, and I remember thinking to myself, “this is not a game, this is not a game.” What followed could come from a movie about tough war reporters: a booze-inspired night out with two journalists in one of the more fancy hotels in Ramallah. Very cliché indeed.

From that day onwards, although I did visit the demonstration a couple of times later on, I never quite experienced that feeling of adventure or excitement I had before. The thrills had faded. I don’t want to say that I lost my innocence or something like that, but I’d certainly become more serious, which ultimately, and regrettably, transformed into a nasty form of cynicism. About demonstrations but also about the whole conflict in general.

The second injury or pathology deals with guilt. I’ve met many friendly people while doing fieldwork and often I’ve asked a lot of them. While being there, I called them my friends. Because, why else would they be so hospitable and open? Or why did they want to be a translator during interviews, free of charge. Yes, I called them friends and rightly so. But now, being back in Holland, I hardly have contact with them. Why? I’m actually not sure. But I simply seem to be unable to just send them an e-mail or even ‘like’ a picture they’ve uploaded on Facebook.

In the end, I think it’s because of guilt. I’m here, living my luxurious life, and practically the only thing I have to worry about is whether I charged the battery of my iPad, so I can listen to my favorite songs on the bus. Alright, true, I also have a PhD dissertation to write but all in all, it’s nothing compared to the living circumstances of my Palestinian friends, who often have to face checkpoints, random arrests, shootings, Kafka-style bureaucracy and a whole range of other nasty stuff that comes with a belligerent occupation. Also, and this sounds terrible, however true it may be, I simply do not WANT to know about their daily predicaments. We simply live completely different lives, are completely different people and maybe it should stay that way. Or so my unconscious self has decided for me. Of course, as an anthropologist I know that it’s all relative. My suffering may by no means be less but just different, so get over it. And besides that, surely they will appreciate my stories and inquiries. Still, I cannot put myself to contact the people I left behind in Palestine, out of a misplaced feeling of guilt. And the fact that I also feel guilty about that, makes it even worse. It’s a vicious circle, indeed.

The last malady I want to discuss is what I call the “go it alone mentality”. This will probably sound very familiar to many of you: the fact that you all have to do it on your own. Sure, people may tell you that’s not true, because there’s for instance your supervisor, or your peers who are suffering from the same self-imposed loneliness. Yes, we can even have nice conferences together, like this one, but your research project, your dissertation or thesis, remains a struggle you have to fight on your own. In the end it is YOU, who has to write those thousands of words.

Doing fieldwork, especially abroad, doesn’t help much. In fact, it makes the whole experience all the more solitary. I’ll gladly admit that there were times when I felt extremely lonely during the months I was away. But the worst of it all, and that’s something you only find out when you return, was in fact coming back home. The feeling that you can’t really share what you’ve experienced, despite the pictures, the e-mails, the weblog or the late-night phone calls, is quite difficult to explain.

When I came back, everything that used to seem so familiar, my home, the food, my friends, they actually appeared rather strange and alien. In fact, everything I longed for while being away, turned out to be quite a disappointment. And what about finding out that the distance between me and my girlfriend turned out to be not just of a geographical nature.

Obviously, such experiences also have other consequences. Physical ones, for example. I picked up smoking only two years ago; and my habit of having a couple of drinks during the weekend has now basically been extended to the whole week. Or what about the roughly 20 pounds I’ve lost abroad…they’re still gone. And probably the strangest thing, I actually came back with a tattoo, much to the surprise of basically everyone who knows me a little.

But, luckily there is a but. In the end, obtaining my PhD entails much more than just reading books and writing papers. The whole process of doing research has taught me valuable things about life. And yes, that includes a lot of difficult and painful things. But, as the cliché goes, what doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger. In the end, I hope to have not only become a better or smarter scholar but, because of the occupational hazards and life experience, also a better and more sensible person in general.

By Miriyam Aouragh The Internet is a key feature in the changing character of Arab politics. This topic has seen an explosive spur since the ongoing December/January Revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt. But the political utilisation was most apparent since the outbreak of the Palestinian Al Aqsa’ Intifada [uprising] late 2000. The Palestinian Intifada fused with the birth of the internet.

Aouragh disseminates two main tensions when studying internet usage amongst Palestinians: mobility vs. immobility and space vs. place. Employing the strategy of a grounded anthropologist, the author enriches online internet/media studies with offline methodology, and vise versa. While filling this gap –roughly speaking, that between qualitative empirical anthropology and quantitative journalistic studies – she sets out to expose the deeper/invisible structures underlying virtual reality.

Aouragh argues that the internet reinforced state-oppression and mainstream media hegemony, yet also enabled new-fangled transnational alliances and political imaginations. She starts from the idea that Palestinian communities exhibit new modes of interactions and, most significantly, have in due course constructed a parallel Palestine, one ‘online’. This Palestine Online is presented as a virtual platform gathering Palestinians of different diasporic localities formerly separated by boundaries and travel restrictions. To demonstrate the offline dynamics Aouragh describes grassroots initiatives such as Across Borders Project which was able to bridge territorial separations; reconnecting many Palestinians for the first time since 1948 and on a scale previously unseen. Palestinian websites became ‘mediating spaces’ through which the Palestinian nation is globally imagined and reshaped. Furthermore, the Arabization of the interface and the mushrooming internet cafes have made the internet a community and non-elite technology. These developments in due course contributed to the ‘rehumanization’ of Palestinians in the global public sphere.

Palestine Online is also reflexive and allows the reader to revisit the evolution of the internet, the analyses are set in a vital historical period when a wave of uprisings erupting in the region and Palestine itself. The transformation of the Palestinian political landscape—the uprising, the collapse of Fatah, the election victory of Hamas, the war on Lebanon and Gaza—and novel internet project thus coincided. Palestine Online explores these shifting contexts and offers a view into the fascinating narratives about the, often unanticipated, impact of the internet offline. The book’s empirical base demonstrates the paradoxes of the implications of internet in everyday life previously lacking in much of the research about the internet. The book locates the internet at the complex intersection between capitalism, technological development, politics of representation, and modes of surveillance and governmentality.

Palestine Online therefore goes beyond dystopian-utopian dichotomy of the internet and frames it as a ‘blessing and a curse’. Aouragh refutes dominant discourses about ICT4D promises and the later ‘Social Media Revolution’ paradigms, which she identifies as being largerly about depoliticizing Western media projections of highly complex and challenging neoliberal contexts. Engaging with classic concepts of Benedict Anderson and Jurgen Habermas, and renewed analyses of Castells and Wellman, Aouragh evokes a critical examination of contemporary novel and critical theory about internet.

Moreover, Palestine Online is  about the construction of Palestinian identity through the prism of the internet, enriched by participatory observations and indepth interviews during long term multi-sited fieldwork in Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine between 2001-2006. This has helped to understand how the internet effects the practices of everyday life; in other words how existing power relations, gender differences, and diaspora (il)legality evolve online. But also how to assess internet as technology embedded in real life materiality; in other words how agency sets out through virtual reality.

Finally, inspired by Gramsci’s notion of the organic intellectual Aouragh writes from a ‘situated knowledge’, and takes the reader out of her academic comfort zones. Aouragh writes about users and producers of the internet as active subjects: they are neither passive victims nor essentialized ‘radicals’; not objects but have a voice and space for their narratives about the first stage of palestinian cyberspace. Palestine Online show that Palestinians are not only ‘marginalised’ but also act upon their own, technologically-frenzied agency. And it shows that the internet is their tool, in search of liberation, rather than an escapist space redefined as liberation.

By Mohammed Amer The immediate reactions of Pakistanis on hearing of the murder of Osama bin Laden were divided – between those showing disbelief and condemning the Americans, and those condemning bin Laden for causing calamity for Pakistan. However as the news emerged, I did not find any emotional outburst in the neighborhood where I stayed.

On the 1^st of May, it was late in the evening when me and my family returned back to our apartment after attending the wedding reception of a relative. Everybody was tired after the preparation and enactment of three day long wedding rituals, usual for Pakistani marriages. Just after midnight  began the ‘load-shedding’ – a compulsory power cut that occurs many times during day and night in Pakistan, and we all fell asleep. Although the power cut usually means more mosquito attacks, that night we were so tired we didn’t even notice.

 If the load-shedding began here in Rawalpindi, an adjacent city of Islamabad, where we were staying with family, it would have been the same time that it ended in Abbottabad – a garrison town about 60 kilometer to the north and where bin Laden was hiding out, presumably for several years now. Around that time US Navy Seals started their military action under the name ‘Geronimo’, and attacked the hide-out compound in Abbottabad. American commandos had already left the hide-out, taking with them the dead body of bin Laden, before the Pakistani military or intelligence agencies could make an assessment about the incident.

 It was late in the morning when I was awoken by a phone call from a friend who teaches in a local government College. He asked ‘if I was watching the TV’ and told me about the killing of bin Laden as a result of the American covered military action in Abbottabad. ”Sad thing is that the Americans came in helicopters, killed Osama and left, while our military kept sleeping” he said. I sensed anger and distress in the tone of voice of my friend. I hurriedly searched for the remote control of the TV but becaue of the hectic chaos of the wedding nobody had watched the TV for the last couple of days and so it was no easy task. Under the dirty laundry spread across beds and sofas, finally I found the remote and turned the TV on. Different local channels showed  the image of a half-furnished ‘compound’ with streams of incoming news running on the screen regarding the American action. The news obviously caused curiosity among the residents of the house now gathered around the TV: some were hurling abuse at the Americans while others said ”He was also responsible for several bomb blasts in Pakistan” reminding them of the daily terrorist attacks in Pakistan. Curiously not a single person used the word shaheed or martyr for Osama.

 In the afternoon I had an appointment with a colleague at the International Islamic University in Islamabad. I took a taxi from Rawalpindi and it crossed through the streets of Cantonment where the headquarters of the Pakistani military are located. I did not observe any unusual security measures or gatherings of people along the road or on the squares. The taxi-driver, a retired soldier in his 50s, moaned about the hot weather while adjusting a wet piece of cloth on his head to keep himself cool. Obviously I wanted to talk with him about today’s incident: “how is it possible that he was hiding-out in Abbottabad—a military city? Where is the proof of his murder they didn’t show any proof of how they killed him”. On my suggestion that the announcement was made by the American President himself and that this is significant in showing that they might have really done it ‘this time’, he turned less assured about his position. ”Babu sahib (a term used for educated people) you know we do not know; these things are played at higher levels and about those decisions we are uneducated”, he tried to conclude this talk on a note of his powerlessness.

 Such a helplessness augmented in the wake of total silence from the civil or military institutes to inform people about the actual events. This situation translated into a narrative of convulsive rage that I found in the words of a student at the Islamic University in Islamabad: ”as a Pakistani I am confused and shocked regarding the Osama incident, and how angry I am with this state of my mind?” There was an element of evaporated jingoism when people like him asked ”what was our military  doing?”; therefore there was anger at the failure of the military and intelligence agencies. Somebody said ”If they knew, they should have taken an action of their own, and if they did not know, they are also guilty of negligence: in both cases they are incompetent”.

 Whether or not the world will ever become enlightened about the actual position of the Pakistani military in Osama’s murder, in the days following the military had to clear its position through its presentation in the Pakistani Parliament where it apologized for its failure. For some Pakistanis this confession was a big thing on the part of the military, however for the majority it added to the mystery of how it was possible that the military, which determines the internal and external policies of Pakistan, could be unaware of such an incident.

Door Silvia van der Wal Tijdens het lezen van een inleidend boek over sociale wetenschappen, in mijn eerste studie jaar, was er een gedachte die mij niet los liet: wanneer een wetenschapper niet ook zelf sociaal is kan zijn geest hem gek maken met theorieën over het sociale leven. In het boek werd voorafgaand aan de theorieën, verteld over de levens van de mensen die essentieel denkwerk hadden verricht in de bouw aan de sociale wetenschappen. Eén ding hadden ze allemaal gemeen, geen van allen had enigszins het evenwicht weten te vinden tussen een sociaal bestaan en onderzoek daarnaar.  Allerlei gekke verhalen waren het; met de ene wetenschapper nog neurotischer dan de ander.Pas tijdens mijn eerste antropologievakken begon ik het idee te krijgen dat sommige wetenschappers het toch wel vrij goed voor elkaar hadden op een werkelijk interactief vlak. Hoewel het misschien ook niet al te best begon, met onze antropoloog Malinowski, die een prachtige klassieker wist te produceren over de groep mensen op wie hij zo dicht had geleefd. Later uit zijn dagboeken kwamen echter vooral verdrongen haat en seksuele frustratie naar voren. Maar hij bracht de volgende generaties antropologen tenminste fysiek dichterbij de mensen: veldwerk werd de norm. In de loop van de tijd werd het ook steeds belangrijker te reflecteren over de rol die je als onderzoeker speelde in het veld. Waardoor het ondertussen eigenlijk niet meer als antropologisch verantwoord wordt beschouwd om daar niet over na te denken. Een antropoloog kan het zich vandaag de dag dus simpelweg niet meer veroorloven contactgestoord te zijn. Waar het andere wetenschappers zou sieren in de naam der wetenschap vrij uitsluitend relaties met boeken te onderhouden, is de reputatie van de antropoloog in hetzelfde geval in groot gevaar.

 Zo is het tijdens mijn opleiding al een integraal onderdeel van mijn studie geworden om op een redelijke manier de mensen leren benaderen over wie je meer wil weten. Wellicht door die indoctrinatie, maar de nadruk die komt op mij zeker niet over als onredelijk. Nu ben ik dan voor het eerst echt in het veld als antropologe. Althans, tot nu toe voelde ik mij er prettiger bij op onderzoekslocaties te zeggen dat het “voor een projectje voor school was”. Het was ook niet erg moeilijk om bijvoorbeeld onder de “ras Jordanezen” in hun stamkroegen een plekje te veroveren onder het mom van ons schoolwerk. Terwijl ik nu aan de andere kant van de wereld ben en vanuit mijn zelfgemaakte theoretische kader beter inzicht probeer te krijgen over een sociaal fenomeen binnen een zelf uitgezochte groep. Nu stel ik mijzelf dus voor als iemand die hier veldwerk aan het doen is. Ondertussen lees ik meer dan ooit tevoren. De gedachten over hoe theorieën de geest van werkelijk sociaal leven af kunnen leiden kwamen bij mij terug na mij twee dagen lang in een slechte Portugese vertaling van Bourdieu verdiept te hebben. Na een gekke droom met velden die allerlei verschillende dimensies hadden, waar Bourdieu over schrijft, werd ik heel verward wakker. In plaats van Distinção weer op te pakken, besloot ik nog wat van mijn informanten op te gaan zoeken en hen eens te gaan vragen over hoe zij zichzelf in het sociale veld plaatsten. Na een flinke portie sociaal contact en een paar biertjes zag ik alles weer helder voor mij. Maar goed, ik verwacht dan weer niet dat daar noemenswaardige bijdragen aan de wetenschappen uit voort zullen komen.

By Ali Taher, visiting researcher from Iraq at the SCA-department of the VU  To begin with: It gives me a strange feeling when I see how the people in the Netherlands openly express their emotions. As a visitor from Iraq it is really interesting for me to see “lovers” and “couples” walking together in the center of Amsterdam, embracing each other, and nothing preventing them to interchange very hot kisses amidst the noise of a busy market !

Every day walking in the beautiful city streets, I continue thinking about all the differences  between Iraqi and Dutch society.  One of the differences is the kind of everyday embarrassing feeling I have at lunch time. You cannot imagine how shocked I was when I saw one of the girls in VU University choose only one apple as her lunch, although we had been together from early morning… It was unbelievable to see one of the professors who behaved no better than the girl, when he chose some soup with only three pieces of biscuit!  I really don’t know how the people here stay alive when they eat almost nothing! It is embarrassing for me to realize I need to eat three times more than what they eat (at least), to feel saturated! Also the taste of the food here is far removed from the taste in Iraq, which is known for its fatty and salty food.

I also smile when I am observing the high discipline of the people at the station when they are waiting for the tram towards “Dam Square”. I asked myself: who forces them, or makes them use this “chipcard” without any sergeant or other official controlling their every movement? And why is there not any kind of fighting when there is overcrowding at the station?

In the meantime, one day I was so fortunate to see hundreds of people gathering at “Dam square” to protest against nuclear energy. The form of the protest was really interesting for me: a music concert, two short speeches (without screaming and emotion!), and the showing of pictures on a huge screen. All urged to stop using nuclear energy. More than a thousand demonstrators, including old men and women, danced with the songs and were influenced by the pictures. That day I had a very nice story to tell my family whom I meet almost daily on “Messenger” about the way of protest, the issue itself, and the fact that women played a role in the protest too, etc. Indeed, I tried to explain all of that to my mother and my little smart sister Zahra (8 years old) who was staring at the laptop screen and replied with simple words and sentences. During my explanation my father joined us on Messenger, and Zahra started talking:

-      Daddy, do you know? Ali said that the people in the Netherlands do not have any kind of problems, and that is the reason they create their problems, and then they demonstrate against their imagined problems!!

I honestly didn’t use this theoretical level of words! Now I wondered: who is the sociologist in my family??!!

Miriyam Aouragh, die eind jaren negentig afstudeerde bij Sociale en Culturele Antropologie (VU) en onlangs promoveerde aan de UvA, publiceerde vorige maand haar boek ‘Palestine Online. Transnationalism, the Internet and the Construction of Identity’.

Voor de Palestijnse diaspora en de gemeenschappen in ballingschap is internet een belangrijk medium geworden bij de vorming van hun nationale en transnationale Palestijnse identiteit. In haar boek beschouwt Aouragh het internet als een plek en een instrument voor Palestijnse groepen in Palestina, Jordanië en Libanon om met elkaar in contact te komen. Ze onderzoekt hoe zij de internettechnologie gebruiken en welke beperkingen de oorlogssituatie oplegt.

Bovendien kijkt ze hoe de ‘generatie van nieuwe idealen’ zich via hun virtuele activiteiten verzoent met de politiek en zelf bepaalt onder welke soevereiniteit ze vallen. Ze ontwerpen via het internet een nieuw, virtueel ‘Palestijns thuisland’ en krijgen zo de ruimte om het verleden te hervinden, mobiliteitskwesties te overwinnen en sociale veranderingen in te zetten. Het boek bekijkt de getroffenen van het conflict met Israël vanuit een nieuwe invalshoek, waardoor we de relatie tussen electronische media, politiek en nationale identiteit beter leren begrijpen.

Miriyam Aouragh is gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en werkt nu aan het Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.

            Voor ons – enigszins Midden-Oosten leken – was met name het beeldmateriaal van Farsad Aria uit Iran een goede introductie op het onderwerp. Aria gebruikt historisch materiaal om een documentaire te maken over de Groene Revolutie in Iran en de nasleep ervan. Aan de hand van dit materiaal wil hij laten zien dat er, buiten de betere toegang tot informatie dankzij sociale media, weinig veranderd is in vergelijking met dertig jaar geleden. Hij wees er bijvoorbeeld op dat in de huidige revolutie in Iran precies dezelfde slogans worden gebruikt als die er dertig jaar geleden gebruikt werden. Door dit in beeld te brengen wees hij gelijk op de problemen van een dergelijke revolutie; wat in Iran begon met een revolutie van iedereen, veranderde later in een revolutie met een duidelijke leiding.

            De andere twee documentaire makers, Ahmed Kamal Jawad uit Irak en Ros Abdelfatah uit Syrië, werken beiden met eigen en meer actueel materiaal. Jawad, op moment van spreken in onzekerheid of hij in Nederland mag blijven, laat enkele filmfragmenten zien uit de omstreden documentaire www.gilgamesh.21 en een korte film over de Bagdad Film school. De studenten vertellen voor de camera hoe risicovol het voor hen is om zich met filmen bezig te houden in Irak – de inlichtingendienst houdt hen namelijk nauwlettend in de gaten. Jawad zegt dat mensen in het publieke leven in Irak zeer wantrouwig tegenover filmploegen zijn; hij spreekt over een fobie met betrekking tot camera’s. De filmpjes die wel naar buiten komen van Irak zijn bijna allemaal gemaakt met mobiele telefoons – en dus vaak van slechte kwaliteit; maar daardoor niet minder van waarde. Dit blijkt bijvoorbeeld uit het verhaal van de laatste spreker. Abdelfatah is actief bezig om via Facebook beeldmateriaal te verzamelen vanuit Syrië om dit naar buiten te brengen. “Elk individu kan zijn stem laten horen en zo een connectie maken met de buitenwereld”. Wij wachtten met grote interesse af op de film (werktitel) De rol van de sociale media in Syrië van Abdelfatah.

Hoewel de sociale media in sommige landen nog sterke restricties kennen, geven ze meer en meer de mogelijkheid aan individuen om een eigen ‘journalistieke’ bijdrage te leveren over een wereld in onrust. De documentairemakers van deze avond functioneren als medium; met het beeldmateriaal van contacten uit het Midden-Oosten willen zij gebeurtenissen van aldaar delen met de buitenwereld via films en sociale media. Om dit te kunnen doen hebben ze een groot offer moeten maken; zij moesten vluchten uit hun geboorteland – vrienden en familie werden achtergelaten. Op de vraag uit het publiek waarom zij dit werk doen, zegt Abdelfatah: “Vrijheid, wij zoeken naar democratie”. Niet alleen hebben wij deze avond veel nieuwe kennis opgedaan met betrekking tot de onrust in het Midden-Oosten; maar ook is wederom bevestigd hoe de sociale media datgene waarover in ‘het nieuws’ wordt gezwegen onder de aandacht kunnen brengen.
