Seeing like a miner: The joys and menaces of informal gold extraction in Chocó, Colombia

‘Let’s not fool ourselves, the Colombian state always tries to shut the door to the poor man in order to lead him to war.’ Manuel* spits out the words while he is contemplating the tranquil flow of the Bebará river that passes alongside his natal village La Villa. His criticism is directed at the government administration of President Santos and its eagerness to combat ‘illegal’ mining. ‘The state made up that mining is illegal. I understand that cocaine is illegal. It’s something that inflicts harm upon a lot of people. But a metal that comes from the earth? I don’t believe it.’

Land te koop – landproblematiek in na-oorlogs Oeganda

SpW foto 1 Rixt Vellenga Gulu 5Door Rixt Vellenga, in Oeganda bekend als Marya    Hoewel de 20-jarige oorlog 6 jaar geleden tot een eind kwam, is de armoede in Acholiland, Noord-Oeganda nog altijd groot. Waar veel families grote stukken land in bezit hebben, hebben ze tegelijkertijd geen kapitaal en middelen om dat land te bewerken (mede als gevolg van het feit dat men 20 jaar geen toegang had tot het land, waardoor het meeste land één grote bush werd, met overal bomen en struiken), en vrijwel geen inkomen om schoolgeld en medicijnen te betalen. Dus wat is de optie? Een stuk van dat land verkopen. Maar land verkopen is niet altijd even eenvoudig. Land kopen ook niet trouwens.
