In our new series “Antropologisch Kieskompas (Anthropological Election Compass) anthropologists express their views on important issues in the upcoming Parliamentary Elections. These include integration, development, environment, and education. The authors reflect critically on how particular current affairs are being dealt with in the public. In this week’s posting, Donya Alinejad writes about the changes to higher education and the student reactions.
By Donya Alinejad This Friday, May 21st, at 13.00, a demonstration against the financial cut-backs on Dutch education will be held in Amsterdam. Demonstrators will start gathering at 13.00 on Damplein and will lead a procession march to Museumplein, where speeches, concerts, and rallies will commence from 14.00 onward. The aim is to fill the Museumplein in defense of higher education and against the planned 20% cutbacks, thus sending a clear political message to leaders in the Hague: no more cutbacks on education. The initiators of the protests are the student groups, LSVb, ISO, JOB, LKvV, and Comite SOS. They are sponsored by radio station Wild FM and have the support of other student and grassroots organizations.

By Pál Nyiri On the website of RNW (Radio Netherlands Worldwide), Sigrid Deters writes that Chinese media in the Netherlands, except the Chinese website of the RNW itself, are “not free from censorship.” She sees avoiding the coverage of political issues such as the Dalai Lama’s visit or the riots in Xinjiang, or reporting on them one-sidedly, as evidence of censorship, although she does not explain who does the censoring and why. Editors of the Chinese papers and TV stations she interviewed denied censorship and said instead that their outlets reflected the opinions of the “community” or that it was better to stay away from controversy. An interesting exception was GogoDutch.nl (???), a popular website that has registered in China in order to avoid being blocked, and therefore, as its founder said, had to comply with Chinese regulations about content filtering.
The shift in overseas Chinese media toward a single discourse of China is a trend I have also noticed, but I am not sure if “censorship” is the right explanation for what is happening.

In onze nieuwe serie ‘het Antropologisch Kieskompas’ laten antropologen hun licht schijnen over belangrijke thema’s in de aankomende Tweede Kamerverkiezingen, zoals integratie, ontwikkelingssamen-werking, milieu en onderwijs. Ze proberen hierbij verder te kijken dan de kortstondige actualiteit en kritisch te reflecteren op hoe er in de politiek over deze thema’s gedacht en gesproken wordt. In de eerste aflevering vraagt Ton Salman zich af wat ‘democratie’ en ‘verkiezingen’ eigenlijk betekenen en plaatst hij vraagtekens bij de notie van ‘representativiteit’.
Door Ton Salman Democratie, als we de immense bibliotheek erover even kort samenvatten, houdt in dat, meestal langs de weg van periodieke verkiezingen waarbij verschillende politieke partijen met elkaar wedijveren, het volk –indirect– regeert; dat er bevolkings-representatie is in een gekozen lichaam; en dat het stemmen zelf geheim, vrij en transparant is. Volgens veel hardcovers op de planken van politicologen en rechtswetenschappers hoort er verder ook nog bij dat een zeker pakket rechten en vrijheden voor iedereen gegarandeerd is, en dat er een rechtsstaat heerst waarin de drie machten (wetgevend, uitvoerend, juridisch) onafhankelijk van elkaar zijn. Dát is democratie! Toch?

Every Sunday during the church sermons the chocolate-brown hat encapsulated my head. Its shape reminded me of the hats that are often seen in old twenties’ movies. Classical, yet slightly funny on the sides, a hat worn by the heroine of a film, an intriguing woman with a pale skin and smoky eyes.
The smoky eyes I did not have. They would not have been allowed in the orthodox Dutch Reformed church around which my anthropological fieldwork revolved. The pale skin, however, I did have, as an inevitable consequence of three months of fieldwork during wintertime.

Peter Geschiere houdt ervan ‘westerse’ aannames over Afrika ter discussie te stellen. Hij wil de ‘vanzelfsprekende’ tegenstelling modern – traditioneel, wij en de ander, Europa en Afrika overbruggen. Hij benadrukt dat het ‘daar’ niet zo heel anders is dan ‘hier’. Geschiere: ‘Ik vind het altijd leuk als ik iets dat in Afrika gebeurt kan gebruiken om bepaalde vooronderstellingen die in Europa leven te bekritiseren. Leave a CommentDoor Lenie Brouwer Wie bij islam alleen maar denkt aan radicalisering, terrorisme en vrouwenonderdrukking moet vooral eens een bijeenkomst bijwonen van de islamitische studentenvereniging MashriQ van de VU. Op 24 februari organiseerde zij een discussieavond rondom de Tegenlicht documentaire van Hans Otten over fundamentalistische moslims in Nederland. Na afloop was er een levendige discussie met de regisseur en werden er uitdagende stellingen besproken. Ongeveer dertig jongeren waren er op af gekomen, evenveel meisjes als jongens.
Terwijl de media alleen maar aandacht lijken te hebben voor incidenten, gaat de emancipatie van allochtone studenten gestaag voort. In één generatie hebben zij bereikt wat autochtonen minstens twee generaties kostte. Veertien procent van de allochtone jongeren volgt momenteel hoger onderwijs, waarvan een belangrijk deel aan de VU. Dit is niet zo maar een abstract gegeven, want wie de VU bezoekt kan het kleurrijke beeld met eigen ogen zien.

Kardinaal Simonis maakt zelf expliciet een vergelijking waarvoor zelfs de scherpste critici van de kerk terug zouden deinzen… De vraag is of hij zelf helemaal de bittere ironie doorheeft. De uitspraak ‘wir haben es nicht gewusst’ verwijst immers naar het niet willen weten, het onvermogen om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor de gruwelijkheden die plaatsvonden tijdens de tweede wereld-oorlog. Zoals een twitteraar reageerde: ‘maar de kern van die Duitse zin was toch dat we dat niet geloofden?’
