By Marina de Regt    Last Saturday the holy Muslim month of Ramadan started. Ramadan, a month of fast-ing and feasting, a month of contemplation, a month that should be full of joy and happiness. In Ramadan Muslims experience what it means to be hungry which will make them cherish what they have and feel compassion for those who are poor and hungry. Who will fast Ramadan in Yemen this year? Are there still people left who are not starving to death? Are there still Yemenis who need Ramadan to know what it is like to be poor and hungry?

Dreamocracy: vluchtelingen als expert-docenten op middelbare scholen

Door Freek Colombijn    Mijn ouders waren tieners toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak en in de twintig toen Nederland bevrijd werd. Ze hebben aan den lijve ondervonden hoe het is om te leven in een land dat niet meer vrij is. Mijn moeder werkte als koerierster voor het verzet en mijn vader werd te werk gesteld in Duitsland en dook tijdens een verlof in Nederland onder om niet terug te hoeven. Ze hebben hun kinderen zeker niet achtervolgd met verhalen over de oorlog, maar wat wij wel met de paplepel ingegoten kregen was het belang van democratie en vrijheid. Vrijheid is niet vanzelfsprekend, 5 mei is een dag om de vrijheid te vieren (en 4 mei een dag om stil te staan bij de mensen die hun leven verloren in de strijd om de democratie te herstellen). Bij elke verkiezing gingen zij, en ga ik, stemmen: als een recht, maar ook als een plicht en als een voorrecht.

 Thursday, November 19th, Prof. dr. Pal Nyiri hold his inaugural lecture called ‘Foreign concessions: the past and future of a form of shared sovereignty.’ 

How are China’s experience of Western colonialism and today’s Chinese projects in Southeast Asia and Africa related to each other? What are the similarities between the 19th century foreign control over customs and security in treaty ports on Chinese territory and contemporary concessions on for instance palm oil plantations in Congo-Kinshasa? And why do we need both anthropology and history to understand these connections?
